Fascia gun massage head
Silicone overmolded onto a zinc-plated steel insert: high rebound, tear resistant, no delamination under percussion. Failures usually come from insert preparation and locking, not the rubber.
Product description
A massage head looks like a block of soft rubber, but it has to hold its shape and its bond under two to three thousand impacts per minute. The steel insert provides the thread and the stiffness; the silicone provides rebound and feel. Once the two separate, the head slips internally - the feel goes dull first, then the whole head comes off.
Two structural routes exist. Mechanical locking uses holes, flanges or undercut grooves so silicone flows through and holds. Primer bonding adds initial strength. Because the head takes load, production parts lead with locking and use primer as support - especially on zinc-plated inserts, where plating adhesion is inconsistent, so confirm the plating first and then pick a transition primer.
Hardness and wall thickness set the rebound. Shore A 20-40 deforms enough to follow muscle contours; wall thickness of 4-10 mm works, thinner on round heads and thicker on tapered ones so the tip is not pushed through.
Structure and material points
- Confirm the plating: adhesion and surface cleanliness set the ceiling; oil and passivation residue must go first.
- Lock mechanically: holes, flanges or undercut grooves let silicone key into the insert against percussion.
- Match rebound to hardness: Shore A 20-40 balances contouring and support; approve the feel on a sample.
- Tear resistance: tips and small radii are where tears start, so radius and wall thickness rise together.
- Cleaning resistance: massage oil and alcohol wipes age the surface; choose against the real contact media.

| Head shape | Round, flat, tapered, U-shape and custom | Body area and technique |
| Wall thickness | 4-10 mm, locally thicker at tips and thin sections | Press and rebound on samples |
| Hardness | Shore A 20-40 typical | Approved on a physical sample |
| Surface | Matte, fine texture, gloss | Touch and cleaning method |
| Insert finish | Zinc plated, nickel plated, or blasted plus primer | Plating adhesion test result |
| Colour | Solid colours, matched to a chip | Colour plaque and sample approval |
| Verification | Impact fatigue, pull-off, compression cycling, media wipe | Cycle test at real amplitude, frequency and media |
Before tooling
Three things to settle
The tool and process freeze once these are agreed; dimensions and tolerances follow the drawing.
- Gun interface (thread, stroke, amplitude) and the weight of the tool
- Body area and technique (tapered, flat or U-shape) and the expected impact frequency
- Contact media (massage oil, alcohol), cleaning routine, and the drop and impact acceptance criteria
FAQ
Questions on the massage head
Does percussion break the bond between silicone and steel?
It depends on insert preparation, primer match and mechanical locking. A flat bond lifts at the edge after tens of thousands of impacts; through-holes or undercut grooves last far longer. Run an impact fatigue test at the real amplitude and frequency.
Can the head be wiped with alcohol?
Wiping is fine, but frequency and concentration age the surface; long use can leave it tacky or micro-cracked. Confirm the cleaning routine when choosing the compound.
Can hardness change the feel?
Yes. One gun with heads of different hardness gives a contouring or a deep-tissue feel. Adjust hardness and wall thickness together so support is not lost.
